FIRE Calculator
Find out when you can reach Financial Independence and Retire Early.
What Is Your FIRE Number?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is built on a simple formula: save enough that your investment returns cover your living expenses permanently.
Your FIRE number = Annual expenses x 25
If you spend RM5,000/month (RM60,000/year), your FIRE number is RM1,500,000. At a 4% withdrawal rate, this portfolio generates RM60,000/year indefinitely.
The 4% Rule — And Its Limits
The 4% rule says you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in year one, then adjust for inflation each year, and your money should last 30+ years. But there are important caveats:
- It was tested on US data. International research shows the 4% rule is safe in only 5 of 20 developed countries studied
- It assumes a 30-year retirement. FIRE retirements often last 40-50 years, requiring a lower rate (~3.5%)
- Sequence of returns matters. A market crash in your first few years of retirement can permanently damage your portfolio
The Savings Rate Is Everything
Your savings rate — not your income — determines how fast you reach FIRE:
| Savings Rate | Years to FIRE (at 7% return) |
|---|---|
| 10% | 51 years |
| 25% | 32 years |
| 50% | 17 years |
| 75% | 7 years |
A person earning RM15,000/month saving 50% will reach FIRE decades before someone earning RM30,000 saving 10%.
Monte Carlo: Beyond Simple Projections
A simple projection assumes constant returns. In reality, markets fluctuate. Monte Carlo simulation runs your retirement scenario 500 times with random market variations, showing you the probability your money lasts.
- Above 80% success rate: Generally considered a strong FIRE plan
- 60-80%: Workable, but consider a buffer
- Below 60%: Significant risk of running out
Sequence-of-Returns Risk
The biggest threat to FIRE isn't low average returns — it's bad returns early in retirement:
- $1M portfolio, $50K/year withdrawals, -15% crash in years 1-2: depletes in ~18 years
- Same portfolio, same average return, but crash happens in years 10-11: retains ~$400K
The vulnerability window is 5-10 years on each side of your retirement date.
Variable Withdrawal Strategies
Rigid 4% withdrawals can be improved with flexible rules:
- Skip inflation adjustments after market down years
- Cut spending 10% if your withdrawal rate exceeds the initial by 20%
- Ratchet up 10% when portfolio grows 50% above starting value
These adaptive approaches increase your safe starting rate to 5.2-5.6% while maintaining near-100% historical success.
Country-Specific Considerations
Malaysia: EPF functions as a near-guaranteed 5.88% return with 0.5% volatility — far more stable than market equities. Keep EPF invested as your last drawdown source.
Australia: Super is tax-free after 60. The Age Pension (~$31K/year single) provides a floor income regardless of market conditions. Factor this into your FIRE number.
Singapore: CPF LIFE provides guaranteed lifetime income from age 65. SRS offers additional tax-advantaged savings for FIRE planners.
