How Much EPF Do You Really Need?

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF/KWSP) is the foundation of retirement planning for most Malaysians. But with 71% of members having less than RM50,000 and the median savings at age 54 being just RM132,826, understanding your EPF trajectory is critical.

EPF Contribution Rates (2026)

Your EPF contributions depend on your salary:

Your SalaryEmployee RateEmployer RateTotal
Below RM5,000/mo11%13%24%
RM5,000+ /mo11%12%23%

At a salary of RM5,000/month, this means RM1,150/month goes into your EPF automatically.

EPF Dividend History

EPF dividends have been remarkably stable:

20235.50%5.40%
20225.35%4.75%

The statutory minimum is 2.50%, but EPF has exceeded this every year since inception.

EPF Retirement Benchmarks

EPF recommends these savings targets at age 60:

  • Basic: RM390,000 (RM1,625/month for 20 years)
  • Adequate: RM650,000 (RM2,708/month for 20 years)
  • Enhanced: RM1,300,000 (RM5,417/month for 20 years)

Only 36% of members are on track for even the basic target.

The Power of Starting Early

EPF contributions compound over time. A 25-year-old contributing RM500/month at 6% EPF dividend will have approximately RM700,000 by age 55. Starting at 35 with the same contribution yields only about RM350,000 — half as much, simply from 10 fewer years of compounding.

What Happens at 55?

At age 55, all three EPF accounts merge into Akaun 55 with full unrestricted access. You can:

  1. Monthly withdrawal — steady income, EPF keeps earning dividends on the balance
  2. Partial withdrawal — take a lump sum, monthly from the rest
  3. Full lump sum — take everything (warning: 1 in 3 exhaust it within 5 years)

All EPF withdrawals are 100% tax-free.
